# Position size

> Choose how many contracts each follower trades: same as the lead, a multiple, a fixed number, scaled by account size, or sized by risk.

Each follower has its own **Position size** settings. You choose them when you add the follower, and you can change them any time in the account's **Settings** tab.

<Note>
  During the free trial, every follower copies a fixed **1 contract** per trade, whatever you choose here. Your sizing takes effect once your paid plan starts.
</Note>

## Sizing methods

| Sizing method | How it works | Example: lead buys 4 MES |
| - | - | - |
| **Contract multiplier** | Lead's contracts × your multiplier. This is the default, at 1. | Multiplier 0.5 → 2 MES |
| **Fixed contracts** | Always the same number of contracts. | Fixed 1 → 1 MES |
| **Equity ratio** | Scales by the follower's equity compared with the lead's. | Follower has half the lead's equity → 2 MES |
| **Equity ratio × multiplier** | Equity ratio first, then multiplied by your multiplier. | Half the equity, multiplier 2 → 4 MES |
| **Fixed risk (% of equity)** | Sizes from the stop loss so each trade risks about this % of the follower's equity. | 0.5% of \$50,000 = about \$250 at risk |
| **Fixed risk (amount)** | Sizes from the stop loss so each trade risks about this dollar amount. | About \$200 at risk |

### Which one should I use?

* **All your accounts are the same size:** Contract multiplier at 1.
* **A follower is half the lead's size:** Contract multiplier at 0.5, or Equity ratio.
* **Accounts of different sizes that change over time:** Equity ratio.
* **A follower should always trade the same amount:** Fixed contracts.
* **You think in dollars at risk:** Fixed risk (% of equity) or Fixed risk (amount).

### Equity ratio methods

These use each account's live equity, so follower sizes change as balances move. For example, if the lead has \$100,000 and buys 4 MES:

* A follower with \$50,000 buys 2 MES.
* A follower with \$25,000 buys 1 MES.
* A follower with \$10,000 gets 0.4 contracts, which is under half a contract, so the trade is skipped. Set **Min contracts** to 1 if it should still take part.

### Fixed risk methods

CopyFlock works out the dollar risk per contract from the distance between the lead's entry and its stop loss, then picks the number of contracts that fits your risk budget.

* Sizes always round **down**, so a copy never risks more than your budget. If even 1 contract would risk too much, the trade is skipped.
* **These methods need a stop loss on the lead's order.** If the lead's trade has no stop loss, the follower trades 1 contract. To skip those trades instead, turn on [Skip trades without a stop loss](/settings/orders#skip-trades-without-a-stop-loss-or-take-profit).

<Accordion title="Worked example: fixed risk on NQ">
  NQ moves \$20 per point per contract. The lead buys 2 NQ with a stop 20 points away, so each contract risks 20 × \$20 = \$400.

  * A follower with **Fixed risk (amount)** of \$400 buys 1 NQ.
  * A follower with **Fixed risk (amount)** of \$800 buys 2 NQ.
  * A follower with **Fixed risk (amount)** of \$300 skips the trade, because 1 contract would risk more than \$300.
</Accordion>

## Rounding

Futures trade in whole contracts, so every size is rounded:

* Sizes round to the **nearest** whole contract, and halves round up. For example, 1.4 becomes 1, and 1.5 becomes 2.
* Anything **under half a contract** is skipped.
* Fixed risk methods always round **down**.

Rounding matters most with small trades. If a follower's multiplier is 0.5 and the lead trades 1 contract, the follower also trades 1 contract (0.5 rounds up), not half the lead's size. If the multiplier is 0.4, the follower skips the trade. For small trades, use Fixed contracts or set **Min contracts** to 1.

## Minimum and maximum contracts

**Min contracts** and **Max contracts** are limits applied after the sizing method, to every trade on this follower.

* **Max contracts** stops a follower from ever trading more than this, even if you size up on the lead. Set it to the account's contract limit.
* **Min contracts** makes the follower trade at least this many, including trades that would otherwise be skipped for being too small.

Leave either one empty for no limit.

<Tip>
  Set **Max contracts** on every follower. It's the simplest protection against a typo or an oversized trade on the lead.
