# Symbol filter

> Choose which markets a follower copies: every symbol, only a list you choose, or everything except a list.

The **Symbol filter** decides which of the lead's markets a follower copies.

| Option | What the follower copies |
| - | - |
| **Copy every symbol** | All of the lead's trades. This is the default. |
| **Copy only these symbols** | Only the symbols you list. |
| **Copy every symbol except these** | Everything except the symbols you list. |

## Enter symbols

Type the symbols separated by commas, for example `MNQ, MES`.

Use the contract's root, such as `MNQ`. It matches every contract month, such as `MNQZ6`.

## Examples

* **A follower that should only trade the indices you're approved for:** choose **Copy only these symbols** and enter `NQ, MNQ, ES, MES`.
* **Keep crude oil off a small account:** choose **Copy every symbol except these** and enter `CL, MCL`.
* **Sit out a news event on one market:** add that market to the exception list for the day, or [pause the follower](/dashboard/managing-accounts#pause-and-resume-copying).

## With symbol mapping

If the follower also uses [symbol mapping](/settings/symbol-mapping), the filter checks both the lead's symbol and the mapped one. For example, with a mapping of NQ → MNQ:

* In **Copy only these symbols**, listing either `NQ` or `MNQ` lets the trade through.
* In **Copy every symbol except these**, listing either `NQ` or `MNQ` skips the trade.

If in doubt, place a small test trade and check the [logs](/dashboard/logs).
